Tiro Clarke, Barrister & Solicitor

I was called to the Bar in Alberta in 1996 and have practiced law in Calgary for over 22 years. I’m not sure how it happened, but these days I’m considered to be a “senior practitioner” and Kristina never misses an opportunity to emphasize the “senior” part.

I have practiced law long enough that sometimes I summarize what I do as “I fix things”, but there’s more to it, obviously. At Admiral Law we definitely “fix things” but we also get clients to where they want to be, whether it’s through a complicated sequence of corporate transactions, a simple house purchase or assisting with their estate planning. As a litigator, I have appeared at all levels of court in Alberta as well as in the Federal Court in files that have ranged from commercial insolvency to estate litigation.

While we never sacrifice the quality of our legal advice and work product, we consistently get feedback from clients who appreciate our relaxed style and our sensitivity to their particular circumstances. We value long term relationships with people whom we like and respect.

I grew up on Vancouver Island in Sidney, BC and still love the ocean. Before becoming a lawyer, I was a mineral exploration geologist on projects ranging from Yukon through British Columbia and into the North Western United States. Rocks still fascinate me as they all have a story to tell. I have two children, a daughter who is currently studying at the University of Victoria and a son who is in Grade 11 at Western Canada High School. For fun I enjoy playing hockey with the Tuesday night boys, as well as fishing and sailing – usually on the West Coast but in warmer waters if the opportunity arises. In other spare time I have been re-acquainting myself with my saxophones (SeaWind saxes made on Vancouver Island by Phil Dwyer and Claudio Fantinato), including playing in one of the jazz bands in the Westwinds Musical Society.

I have worked with Tiro for many years and we seem to be a pretty good team. If you have a corporate or commercial matter it’s likely that I’ll be involved in moving information and documents back and forth, among other things. I’ll do my best to let you know exactly what you need to do and what to expect during your time with us. I grew up in Montreal and moved to Calgary in 1994. I have a fairly large family and after them, my passion is water polo, where my involvement includes both playing and coaching.

I have worked at Admiral Law since early 2015 and will handle much of the documentation in your real estate transaction. This usually starts with an introductory email and then moves through information collection and document preparation and then, after you have met with one of our lawyers, closing your transaction and reporting to you. Admiral Law has helped to pilot the Alberta Land Titles Online (“ALTO”) project and I’m proud to be the first person in Alberta to register a land titles document online through ALTO.

I was born in Mexico but moved to Calgary when I was quite young. I speak  Spanish and have two young children to keep me busy, as well as hiking and camping when I’m not chained to my desk.

I am a junior partner with Admiral Law and my practice is largely dedicated to ongoing advice to commercial clients, including transactional work such as acquisitions and divestitures. I have represented both purchasers and sellers in share and asset transactions and have recently acted for the purchasers of two hotels in British Columbia, as well as the purchasers of  significant interests in industrial enterprises.  I won’t miss an opportunity to remind Tiro that he is the “senior” partner but that doesn’t stop us from working closely together to manage all the legal aspects of our clients’ matters. Before joining Admiral Law as an articling student, I spent two summers working as a Judicial Clerk at the Provincial Court of Alberta, and one summer as a legal student working closely with in-house counsel in and Oil & Gas firm on corporate files. I obtained both my Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Juris Doctor from the University of Calgary.  I was born and raised in Calgary, an remain passionate about volunteering with various local organizations throughout the year.  I’m particularly excited about my latest project, joining the Calgary Stampede Promotions Committee.  In my spare time, I enjoy remaining active and usually play on various recreational sports teams year-round.

I joined Admiral Law in June of this year as a student-at-law.  I graduated from the Thompson Rivers University Faculty of Law in Kamloops, British Columbia in 2019. After spending a few years enjoying living in the mountains of interior BC, I am thrilled to return to my home city of Calgary.  Prior to law school, I worked as a Geologist after obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Alberta.  I work closely with Tiro and Kristina on corporate, commercial and real estate matters. When I’m not in the office, any spare time I have is spent in the mountains. Whether it is hiking or mountain biking in the summer or skiing in the winter, you can usually find me somewhere outside.
